It is such an honor to be given this opportunity to share with you some thoughts on the role that education plays in building a vibrant community. Surely, there are many different perspectives on what education means. So, we are not going to attempt to define it. Yet deep down in all of us, in fact in our culture as well, there is a strong stirring that prompts us to focus on education, especially the education of our children. That is why we create institutions, such as schools, to fulfill this very purpose\u2014a purpose that serves not only our individual needs, but that of our family, our community, our society\u2014in short, civilization itself. More on this later, let us start our exploration today with a story.<\/p>

\u5f9e\u524d\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u7537\u5b69\u548c\u4ed6\u7684\u5bb6\u4eba\u4f4f\u5728\u4e00\u500b\u5893\u5730\u9644\u8fd1\u3002\u7537\u5b69\u7684\u6bcd\u89aa\u6ce8\u610f\u5230\u5979\u7684\u5152\u5b50\u958b\u59cb\u6548\u4eff\u6baf\u846c\u696d\u8005\u548c\u5c08\u696d\u9001\u846c\u8005\u7684\u884c\u70ba\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u5979\u6c7a\u5b9a\u642c\u5bb6\u4e86\u3002\u65bc\u662f\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u642c\u5230\u57ce\u88e1\u3002\u7537\u5b69\u958b\u59cb\u6a21\u4eff\u9644\u8fd1\u5546\u4eba\u7684\u6d3b\u52d5\uff0c\u6a21\u4eff\u7576\u5730\u5c60\u5bb0\u5834\u7684\u8072\u97f3\u3002\u9019\u6bcd\u89aa\u4e5f\u8a8d\u70ba\u9019\u4e0d\u9069\u5408\u5979\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\u3002<\/p>

\u65bc\u662f\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u53c8\u642c\u5230\u4e86\u4e00\u6240\u5b78\u6821\u9644\u8fd1\u7684\u5c0f\u623f\u5b50\u88e1\u3002\u5728\u9019\u88e1\uff0c\u5979\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\u958b\u59cb\u6a21\u4eff\u8001\u5e2b\u7684\u8209\u6b62\u3001\u8a00\u8a9e\u548c\u7d00\u5f8b\u3002\u5979\u5c0d\u6240\u76ee\u7779\u7684\u4e00\u5207\u611f\u5230\u9ad8\u8208\uff0c\u5979\u78ba\u4fe1\u81ea\u5df1\u7d42\u65bc\u627e\u5230\u4e86\u9069\u5408\u5b69\u5b50\u6210\u9577\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u3002\u4ed6\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\u4e5f\u4e0d\u8ca0\u6240\u671b\u3002\u4ed6\u6210\u70ba\u4e00\u540d\u5b78\u8005\uff0c\u5c0d\u4e2d\u570b\u7684\u54f2\u5b78\u548c\u6587\u5316\u5f71\u97ff\u6df1\u9060\u3002<\/p>

Once there was a boy who lived with his family near a graveyard. Noticing that her son was beginning to emulate the behavior of the undertaker and professional mourners, the boy\u2019s mother decided that the time had come for the family to move. So, they moved into town where the boy began to mimic the activities of the nearby merchants and imitate the sounds from the local slaughterhouse. This, too, she found unworthy of her son. So, they moved again to a small home near a school. Here, her son began to imitate the behavior, speech, and discipline of the teachers. Delighted by what she saw, she was convinced that she had finally found the right place for her boy to grow. And he did. He became a scholar that changed forever the philosophical and cultural landscape of China.[i]<\/a><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u773e\u6240\u5468\u77e5\uff0c\u9019\u5c31\u662f\u300a\u5b5f\u6bcd\u4e09\u9077\u300b<\/strong>\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u3002\u9019\u500b\u6545\u4e8b\u5f9e\u5ee3\u7fa9\u4e0a\u8868\u660e\u4e86\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u6982\u5ff5\u3002\u5b83\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u77ad\u89e3\u5230\u4e00\u4f4d\u6bcd\u89aa\u7684\u667a\u6167\uff0c\u5979\u5728\u6559\u80b2\u5b50\u5973\u65b9\u9762\u6fc0\u52f5\u8457\u6210\u5343\u4e0a\u842c\u7684\u4eba\u3002\u5b83\u5e6b\u52a9\u6211\u5011\u4e86\u89e3\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u771f\u6b63\u8d77\u9ede\u3002<\/p>

This, as many of us will know, is the well-known story of Mencius’s Mother relocating her home three times to improve her son\u2019s education [\u5b5f\u6bcd\u4e09\u8fc1<\/strong> (M\u00e8ngm\u01d4 s\u0101n qi\u0101n)]. This story is indicative of the very conception of education in a broad way. It provides insights into the wisdom of a mother who inspired thousands like her in the education of their children. It helps us to understand where education really begins.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u5bb6\u5ead\u662f\u6587\u660e\u7684\u57fa\u672c\u55ae\u4f4d\uff0c\u9019\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u5728\u8a31\u591a\u6587\u5316\u4e2d\u666e\u904d\u5b58\u5728\u7684\u6982\u5ff5\u3002\u5b83\u662f\u5efa\u7acb\u6211\u5011\u7684\u4e16\u754c\u89c0\u548c\u9053\u5fb7\u4eba\u683c\u57fa\u790e\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u3002\u5b5f\u5b50\u7684\u6bcd\u89aa\u9078\u64c7\u4e86\u4e00\u500b\u9760\u8fd1\u5b78\u6821\u7684\u5bb6\uff0c\u5979\u5927\u6982\u5f88\u77ad\u89e3\u201c\u5148\u5929\u201d\u8207\u201c\u5f8c\u5929\u201d\u4e4b\u9593\u7684\u52d5\u614b\u95dc\u4fc2\u3002\u5275\u9020\u4e00\u500b\u5152\u7ae5\u53ef\u4ee5\u8301\u58ef\u6210\u9577\u7684\u74b0\u5883\uff0c\u610f\u5473\u8457\u5169\u7a2e\u6559\u80b2\u8005\u2014\u2014\u6559\u5e2b\uff08\u6b63\u5f0f\uff09\u548c\u5bb6\u9577\uff08\u975e\u6b63\u5f0f\uff09\u4e4b\u9593\u7684\u5408\u4f5c\u548c\u76f8\u4e92\u652f\u6301\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\u2014\u2014\u5728\u6559\u80b2\u5152\u7ae5\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u5404\u81ea\u5728\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u7bc4\u570d\u5167\u767c\u63ee\u8457\u5f71\u97ff\u529b\u3002\u6211\u5e0c\u671b\u5728\u5ea7\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u4f4d\u90fd\u4ecd\u6709\u8208\u8da3\u518d\u591a\u807d\u4e00\u500b\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5b5f\u5b50\u7684\u7ae5\u5e74\u6545\u4e8b\u4e26\u6c92\u6709\u5c31\u6b64\u7d50\u675f\u3002<\/p>

That the family is the basic unit of civilization is a concept that is prevalent in many cultures. It is a place where the foundation of our world view and moral characters is built. Having chosen a home near a school, Mencius\u2019 Mother probably has understood well the dynamic relations between \u2018nature\u2019<\/em> and \u2018nurture\u2019<\/em>. Creating an environment in which children can flourish implies the collaborative and mutually supportive relationship between two kind of educators\u2014the teachers (formal) and the parents (informal) \u2014each exerting their own influences within their own sphere in educating the child. We hope you are in the mood for at least one more story, if you are not, please bear with us as the story of Mencius\u2019 childhood did not end there.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u9019\u500b\u6545\u4e8b\u5c31\u662f\u5b5f\u6bcd\u65b7\u6a5f\u6559\u5b50\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u3002\u5b5f\u5b50\u5c0f\u6642\u5019\u53ad\u5026\u5b78\u7fd2\u3002\u6709\u4e00\u6b21\u5979\u6bcd\u89aa\u767c\u73fe\u5b5f\u5b50\u5ffd\u8996\u4e86\u4ed6\u7684\u5b78\u696d\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u5979\u5c07\u4e00\u76f4\u5728\u7e54\u7684\u5e03\u88c1\u6389\u4e86\u4e00\u534a\u3002\u5b5f\u5b50\u5c0d\u9019\u7a2e\u884c\u70ba\u611f\u5230\u9707\u9a5a\uff0c\u4f46\u4ed6\u7684\u6bcd\u89aa\u544a\u8a34\u4ed6\uff0c\u9019\u4e0d\u904e\u662f\u548c\u4ed6\u5ffd\u8996\u5b78\u696d\u6240\u505a\u7684\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u6c92\u6709\u5b8c\u6210\u7684\u529f\u8ab2\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u6587\u4e0d\u503c\u7684\u3002\u5b5f\u5b50\u5438\u53d6\u4e86\u6559\u8a13\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u767c\u596e\u5716\u5f3a\u3002<\/p>

Another little anecdote further exemplifying his mother\u2019s virtues tells of a time when she found he was neglecting his studies and so cut in half the cloth she had been steadily weaving. Mencius was shocked at this behavior, but his mother told him it was no more than what he, himself, was doing by not finishing his schoolwork and so rendering it worthless. Mencius learned the lesson and returned to his studies.[ii]<\/a><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u901a\u904e\u5b5f\u6bcd\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u5e0c\u671b\u4f60\u80fd\u770b\u6211\u5011\u5e0c\u671b\u5e36\u51fa\u4e00\u9ede\ufe30\u5c31\u662f\u5b69\u5b50\u5f9e\u5bb6\u5ead\u5f97\u5230\u7684\u6307\u5c0e\u548c\u652f\u6301\u662f\u6559\u80b2\u9019\u5f35\u62fc\u5716\u7684\u95dc\u9375\u90e8\u5206\u3002\u50cf\u5b78\u6821\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u6559\u80b2\u6a5f\u69cb\u53ea\u662f\u5c0d\u6559\u80b2\u9019\u5f35\u62fc\u5716\u7684\u4e00\u500b\u90e8\u5206\u505a\u51fa\u8ca2\u737b\u3002\u5b83\u4e0d\u80fd\u55ae\u7368\u5b8c\u6210\u3002\u5b69\u5b50\u5f9e\u5bb6\u5ead\u5f97\u5230\u7684\u652f\u6301\u662f\u81f3\u95dc\u91cd\u8981\u7684\uff1b\u5b83\u662f\u958b\u59cb\u548c\u5b8c\u6210\u62fc\u5716\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u584a\u548c\u6700\u5f8c\u4e00\u584a\u95dc\u9375\u7684\u6750\u6599\u3002\"\"\u6b63\u662f\u5728\u5bb6\u5ead\u4e2d\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u7684\u7fd2\u6163\u548c\u6027\u683c\u7684\u57fa\u790e\u624d\u5f97\u4ee5\u5efa\u7acb\u3002\u5728\u90a3\u88e1\uff0c\u5927\u5bb6\u5ead\u548c\u793e\u5340\u70ba\u6211\u5011\u7684\u6210\u9577\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u4e00\u500b\u80a5\u6c83\u7684\u68f2\u606f\u5730\u3002\u96a8\u8457\u6211\u5011\u7684\u6210\u719f\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u901a\u904e\u884c\u8d70\u670d\u52d9\u4e4b\u8def\uff0c\u70ba\u6539\u5584\u6211\u5011\u7684\u793e\u5340\u4f5c\u51fa\u8ca2\u737b\u3002\u6b63\u662f\u5728\u9019\u7a2e\u65b9\u5f0f\u4e0b\uff0c\u751f\u547d\u7684\u8ff4\u5708\u624d\u5f97\u4ee5\u5b8c\u6210\u3002<\/p>

These stories of the critical role of Mencius\u2019 Mother in his education make us wonder where we got the idea of checking our children\u2019s homework from\u2026 We hope you see where we are going with this. The guidance and support a child receives from the family is a crucial piece of the educational puzzle. An educational institution such as a school contributes only a piece to the puzzle that is education. It cannot do it alone. The support a child receives from the family is essential; it is the first and the last crucial piece that begins and completes the puzzle. It is within the family that the foundation of our habits and characters is build. From there, the extended family and the community provide a rich habitat within which we grow. As we mature, we contribute back to the betterment of our community by walking a path of service. It is in this way that the circle of life finds completion.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u6559\u80b2\u6709\u96d9\u91cd\u76ee\u7684\u2014\u2014\u5b8c\u5584\u5b78\u751f\u7684\u6027\u683c\u548c\u767c\u5c55\u4ed6\u5011\u70ba\u793e\u6703\u9032\u6b65\u4f5c\u51fa\u8ca2\u737b\u7684\u80fd\u529b\u3002<\/p>

Education serves a dual purpose\u2014the refinement of the character of the student and the development of their capacity to contribute to the progress of society.<\/p>

\u904e\u53bb\uff0c\u5152\u7ae5\u662f\u7531\u6574\u500b\u793e\u5340\u64ab\u990a\u7684\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u65b9\u65b9\u9762\u9762\u90fd\u662f\u7531\u5468\u570d\u74b0\u5883\u5851\u9020\u7684\u3002\u201c\u5152\u7ae5\u4e43\u662f\u793e\u5340\u7684\u6700\u73cd\u8cb4\u5bf6\u85cf\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u4ed6\u5011\u662f\u672a\u4f86\u7684\u5e0c\u671b\u548c\u4fdd\u8b49\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u5b55\u80b2\u4e86\u672a\u4f86\u793e\u6703\u7684\u7279\u5fb5\uff0c\u800c\u9019\u7279\u5fb5\u5728\u5f88\u5927\u7a0b\u5ea6\u4e0a\u53d6\u6c7a\u65bc\u69cb\u6210\u793e\u5340\u7684\u6210\u5e74\u4eba\u5c0d\u5152\u7ae5\u6240\u505a\u6216\u672a\u505a\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\u3002\u201d\u6559\u80b2\u4e0d\u50c5\u50c5\u662f\u5152\u7ae5\u7684\u6b0a\u5229\u3002\u5b83\u4e5f\u662f\u4ed6\u5011\u5468\u570d\u6210\u5e74\u4eba\u7684\u8cac\u4efb\u3002\u5728\u4efb\u4f55\u793e\u6703\u4e2d\uff0c\u6709\u4e09\u500b\u660e\u986f\u7684\u5be6\u9ad4\u5728\u904b\u4f5c–\u500b\u4eba\u3001\u793e\u5340\u548c\u6a5f\u69cb\u3002\u9019\u4e9b\u5be6\u9ad4\u4e2d\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u500b\u90fd\u8981\u767c\u63ee\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u4f5c\u7528\u3002\u4e0d\u5e78\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u8fd1\u5e7e\u5341\u5e74\u4f86\uff0c\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u8cac\u4efb\u5e7e\u4e4e\u53ea\u653e\u5728\u4e86\u4f5c\u70ba “\u7279\u5b9a\u7a2e\u985e\u7684\u6b63\u5f0f\u6a5f\u69cb “\u7684\u5b78\u6821\u8eab\u4e0a\u3002\"\" \u9019\u7a2e\u6709\u9ede\u73fe\u4ee3\u7684\u3001\u5c08\u9580\u7684\u5b9a\u7fa9\u525d\u596a\u4e86\u6211\u5011\u4f5c\u70ba\u4e00\u500b\u4eba\u985e\u793e\u6703\u96c6\u9ad4\u9032\u884c\u5b78\u7fd2\u548c\u6559\u5b78\u7684\u8c50\u5bcc\u907a\u7522\u3002\u6211\u5011\u9700\u8981\u4e00\u7a2e\u65b0\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u4f86\u770b\u5f85\u6559\u80b2\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u5b78\u6821\u5982\u4f55\u878d\u5165\u9019\u4e00\u6982\u5ff5\u3002\u5728\u6211\u5011\u7684\u6982\u5ff5\u4e2d\uff0c \u201c\u5b78\u6821\u201d \u9664\u4e86\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u6a5f\u69cb\u5916\uff0c\u5176\u5b58\u5728\u672c\u8eab\u5c31\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u201c\u5b78\u7fd2\u578b\u793e\u5340\uff0c\u7121\u8ad6\u662f\u5152\u7ae5\u9084\u662f\u6210\u4eba\uff0c\u516c\u5171\u9084\u662f\u79c1\u4eba\uff0c\u7fa9\u52d9\u9084\u662f\u81ea\u9858\u201d\u3002<\/p>

It used to be that children were raised by the entire community. Indeed every aspect of their lives is shaped by their surroundings. \u201cChildren are the most precious treasure a community can possess, for in them are the promise and guarantee of the future. They bear the seeds of the character of future society which is largely shaped by what the adults constituting the community do or fail to do with respect to children.\u201d[iii]<\/a> Education is not just a right of children. It is also a responsibility of the adults and community around them. There are three obvious entities that operate in any society \u2013 the individual, the community and the institutions. Each of these entities has an educational role to play. Unfortunately, in recent decades, the responsibility to educate has been placed almost solely on schools as \u201cparticular sorts of formal institutions.\u201d[iv]<\/a> This somewhat modern, specialized definition robs us of our rich heritage of collective learning and teaching as a human society. We need a new, broader way to look at education and how a school fits into this conception. The \u2018school\u2019 in our conception, besides being an institution, is by its very existence a \u201clearning community, whether for children or adults, public or private, compulsory or voluntary.\u201d[v]<\/a><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The concept of a learning community<\/em> serves as the context for our educational endeavors for community building. In its approach to education, the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community embraces all facets of education and this can be seen in at least two areas of community life. The School of the Nations serves one of these areas, functioning as an entity that seeks to foster the moral and intellectual development of children of all backgrounds in a sophisticated network that connects the local to the global, ranging from kindergarten, primary, secondary to the tertiary. In another area of community life, efforts are being made in a complex network of a different sort that distills global learning to address educational needs at the local level through courses and training that engage numerous individuals and groups in Macau to offer \u201cspiritual education starting from the age of five, upwards to the age of junior youth (ages 11 \u2013 14), and through into adulthood.\u201d \u201cThe contribution made by Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00eds is distinguished by its focus on building capacity for service; it is an approach founded on faith in the ability of a population to become the protagonists of their own development.\u201d Through the inspiration of the teachings of the Faith, participants help to improve the spiritual character and social conditions of the wider community to which they belong. The contribution of the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community is modest. We do not have all the answers to something so vast as education, but we have some ideas as to what we have learned and what we need to learn next.<\/p>

\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u76ee\u6a19\u662f\u5354\u52a9\u500b\u4eba\u767c\u5c55\u77e5\u8b58\u3001\u7d20\u8cea\u3001\u614b\u5ea6\u3001\u6280\u80fd\u548c\u80fd\u529b\uff0c\u4f7f\u4ed6\u5011\u80fd\u5920\u638c\u63e1\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6210\u9577\uff0c\u4e26\u6210\u70ba\u5efa\u8a2d\u4e16\u754c\u6587\u660e\u7684\u7cfb\u7d71\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\u7a4d\u6975\u3001\u8ca0\u8cac\u7684\u53c3\u8207\u8005\u3002<\/p>

The following are some convictions that underpin our approach to education:<\/p>

The goal of education is to assist individuals to develop the knowledge, qualities, attitudes, skills and abilities that enable them to take charge of their own growth, and become active, responsible participants in a systematic process of building a world civilization.<\/p>

The civilization envisioned consists of both a material and a spiritual dimension. In order to advance collectively with intellectual rigor and clarity of thought, we look to Science for the provision of a systematic methodology for investigating physical reality.\"\"\u00a0As to the very foundation that this civilization is to be built upon, we turn our attention to Religion \u2013 a system of knowledge that cultivates foundational qualities for which \u201cthe world stands in great need:\u00a0 unity, trustworthiness, mutual support, collaboration, fellow feeling, selflessness, commitment to truth, a sense of responsibility, a thirst to learn, the love of an all-embracing heart.\u201d[vi]<\/a> These qualities, or moral values as some may call them, are not mere constructs of social processes. Rather, they are expressions of the inner forces that operate in the spiritual reality of every human being, and education must concern itself with these forces if it is to tap the roots of motivation and produce meaningful and lasting change.<\/p>

Friends, we are gathered here today because we, each in our own way, are thinking about community building in the context of Macau. We hope it is clear, that education has a pivotal role to play in this process. But education cannot be viewed only as the responsibility of a few.\u00a0 Education has to deal with the expansion of knowledge, taking into account its generation, application and diffusion. In this context of a learning community<\/em>, in our approach, every one is a protagonist of their own education. Every human being is created noble and capable to educate and to be educated. Therefore, the educational approach we envision emphasizes a collaborative methodology of mutual support and the development of capacity of these protagonists is viewed in terms of \u201cwalking a path of service\u201d with a definite focus on the betterment of their community. On such a path, someone accompanies you as you learn to walk the path yourself. If you fall, there is somebody close by to give you a hand. Mistakes are accepted. Gradually, you gain the required confidence in acknowledging your weaknesses and in recognizing the strengths in others. You who were once being assisted are now assisting other to walk the path. This is the nature of capacity building in the context of a learning community where the one \u201cwho teaches\u201d and the one \u201cwho learns\u201d are both an integral part of the educational process that is participatory. That brings us to the question of the method of teaching-learning. One of the dimensions of our methodology is the raising of consciousness and the exercise of will. \"\"Teaching-learning is an active and conscious process. If we let go of the requirement that the student has to know that he or she is being educated, we lose the chance to create educational processes that lead to freedom; we sacrifice justice as a governing principle of education and open the door wide to manipulation. Admittedly, at an early age, the student will know little of the nature of the educational process, but systematically raising such an awareness is an essential task of one who is to be called a teacher.<\/p>

And now we wish to address a few words to parents, who bear the primary responsibility for the upbringing of their children. Since education is now highly formalized, it is understandable that some parents appear to think that the education of their children is the exclusive responsibility of institutions (like schools); others believe that in order to preserve the independence of children to investigate the world and make sense of it for themselves, any direct involvement of parents is a form of intrusion. Still others feel inadequate to take on such a task. None of this is correct. \u2018Abdu\u2019l-Bah\u00e1 has said that \u201cit is enjoined upon the father and mother, as a duty, to strive with all effort to train the daughter and the son.\u201d Independent of the level of their education, parents are in a critical position to shape the spiritual development of their children. They should not ever underestimate their capacity to mold their children\u2019s moral character.\"\" For they exercise indispensable influence through the home environment.[vii]<\/a>\u00a0 It is hard to argue that what Mencius\u2019 Mother did for his upbringing is not education. Any inadequacy she might have felt is compensated by her large degree of sacrifice and her unconditioned love. In view of his negligence in study, Mencius\u2019 Mother responded with the kind of love that demands discipline, the courage to accustom her child to hardship, and not to indulge his whims or leave him entirely to his own devices. These, we are sure, all parents can aspire to do.<\/p>

However, in order to educate their children to become, as young adults, autonomous individuals engaged in learning\u2014both personal and collective\u2014who in turn can contribute to the well being of others and society as a whole, parents need something more if they are to fulfil their ardent wish. There is an urgent need to reconceptualize education in such a way that the family is returned to its rightful place as an educational unit in which each member\u2019s consciousness is raised to a level befitting the coming of age of the human species. Engaging parents in the process of capacity building is not an area about which we can enter into satisfactory discussion at this point. This is clearly an area in which we still have much to learn. Fortunately, we think we have an idea where to begin.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

There are three distinct yet inter-related aspects of the educational endeavors that are emerging in society that are being promoted by the Macau Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community. These include classes for the spiritual education of children in which they also develop a deep appreciation for the fundamental unity of the various human outlooks; groups that assist junior young to navigate a crucial stage of their lives and to withstand the corrosive forces that especially target them; and circles of study wherein youth and adult participants reflect on the spiritual nature of existence and build capacity for service to the community and society.[viii]<\/a> The doors to these learning spaces are wide open. Today, there are scores of people emerging in the Macau community\u2014mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, young and old\u2014serving as tutors, animators, or children\u2019s class teachers at various neighborhood and other community settings both formal and informal.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u64d4\u4efb\u5152\u7ae5\u73ed\u6559\u5e2b\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u7279\u5225\u662f\u5bb6\u9577\uff0c\u5c0d\u4ed6\u5011\u6240\u6559\u7684\u5b78\u751f\u7684\u5ee3\u6cdb\u6559\u80b2\u767c\u5c55\u6709\u8457\u6fc3\u539a\u7684\u8208\u8da3\u3002\u5411\u793e\u5340\u63d0\u4f9b\u7684\u5152\u7ae5\u73ed\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u70ba\u671f\u516d\u5e74\u7684\u8a08\u756b\uff0c\u91cd\u9ede\u662f5-11\u6b72\u7684\u5152\u7ae5\u3002\u76ee\u524d\u63d0\u4f9b\u7684\u662f\u524d4\u5e74\u7684\u5b78\u7fd2\u6750\u6599\uff0c\u4e26\u5728\u4ee5\u5f8c\u7684\u968e\u6bb5\u9010\u6b65\u5f15\u5165\u88dc\u5145\u7684\u6750\u6599\u3002\u5728\u4e00\u4e9b\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u9084\u70ba5\u6b72\u4ee5\u4e0b\u7684\u5152\u7ae5\u958b\u8a2d\u4e86\u8ab2\u7a0b\u3002\"\"\u5152\u7ae5\u73ed\u4e00\u5e74\u7d1a\u7684\u76ee\u6a19\u662f\u767c\u5c55\u6709\u52a9\u65bc\u5b8c\u5584\u4eba\u683c\u7684\u7cbe\u795e\u54c1\u8cea\uff1b\u800c\u4e8c\u5e74\u7d1a\u5247\u5728\u9019\u4e9b\u8ab2\u7a0b\u7684\u57fa\u790e\u4e0a\uff0c\u57f9\u990a\u9ad4\u73fe\u4e0a\u4e00\u5e74\u6240\u63a2\u8a0e\u7684\u9019\u4e9b\u5167\u5728\u54c1\u8cea\u7684\u7fd2\u6163\u548c\u884c\u70ba\u6a21\u5f0f\u3002\u96a8\u5f8c\u7684\u5e74\u7d1a\u5247\u5074\u91cd\u65bc\u77e5\u8b58\u65b9\u9762\u53ca\u5176\u5c0d\u5b8c\u5584\u4eba\u683c\u7684\u5f71\u97ff\u3002<\/p>

Those serving as children\u2019s class teachers, especially parents, take a keen interest in the broad educational development of those they teach. The children\u2019s classes offered to the community is a six-year program with a focus on children ages 5 \u2013 11. At the moment, materials for study for the first 4 years are made available with an additional one gradually introduced at a later stage. \"\"In some localities, classes are also conducted for those younger than 5. The aim of Grade 1 of the children\u2019s classes is the development of spiritual qualities that contribute to the refinement of character while Grade 2 builds on these lessons by fostering the habits and pattern of conduct that give expression to these inner qualities explored in the previous year. The subsequent grades focus on the issues of knowledge and its implications for the refinement of character.<\/p>

A moral empowerment program is designed specifically for the young ones in the community known as junior youth, who fall between the ages of, say, 11 and 14. They represent a special group with special needs as they are somewhat in between childhood and youth when many changes are occurring within them. Creative attention must be devoted to involving them in programs of activity that will engage their interests, mold their capacities for teaching and service, and involve them in social interaction with older youth. The employment of the arts in various forms can be of great value in such activity. Thus, the program is carried out in the form of a youth group where these junior youth are supported by animators who are young people a few years their senior.<\/p>

Those serving as tutors for the activity known as \u201cstudy circles\u201d are naturally concerned with the extent to which those approaching or entering adulthood\u2014girls and boys alike\u2014can access and benefit from education of many kinds. It is within these circles of study that youth and adults participate in courses that help them reflect on the spiritual nature of existence and build capacity for service to the community and society. It is through this main sequence of courses that children\u2019s class teachers, animators of junior youth groups and tutors of study circles are trained. With this, some of you in the audience have direct and personal experiences. We hope more will join us in this endeavor.<\/p>

\u201cA natural outcome of the participation of individuals and families in this process has been an increased consciousness of the importance of education in all its forms.\u201d[ix]<\/a>\u00a0 Regardless of whether it is in a school or at home, at the heart of the educational efforts we have been describing lies a process of elevated conversation. These conversations explore questions and themes such as parenting, early childhood education, the intellectual and character development of youth, lifelong learning, material and spiritual aspects of development, the importance service to humanity, to name just a few.\u00a0 Regardless of its form, the conversations we are bringing to your consideration are not solely an intellectual exercise. Ideas find concrete expression in service to humanity. Such conversations welcome the participation of people coming from totally different backgrounds ensuring universal participation. Although still in its initial stages, the educational process promoted by the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community in Macau is clearly making some contributions to the establishment of such a conversation.<\/p>

In the vast universe of education and the lifelong efforts to traverse it, we find within the family a beacon of hope; we see in every child a mine full of gems of inestimable value, in every mother the first educator of this child and in every father a model of discipline. With proper attention, this child will grow up as a conscious builder of a new civilization.\u00a0 As educators, including, parents, teachers and indeed all members of the community\u2014we need to take responsibility for ensuring consciousness is raised and noble aspirations are formed in young people. \"\"From this perspective, then, the long-term development of a community and, ultimately, of a nation, from generation to generation, depends to a large degree on the effort to draw on the zeal and enthusiasm characteristic of the period of youth and assists them to see in themselves the potential for creating the world anew and to bring their inspirations to the people of the world to assume responsibility for collective social progress.[x]<\/a><\/p>

It is such an honor to be given this opportunity to share with you some thoughts on the role that education plays in building a vibrant community. Surely, there are many different perspectives on what education means. So, we are not going to attempt to define it. Yet deep down in all of us, in fact in our culture as well, there is a strong stirring that prompts us to focus on education, especially the education of our children. That is why we create institutions, such as schools, to fulfill this very purpose\u2014a purpose that serves not only our individual needs, but that of our family, our community, our society\u2014in short, civilization itself. More on this later, let us start our exploration today with a story.<\/p>

Once there was a boy who lived with his family near a graveyard. Noticing that her son was beginning to emulate the behavior of the undertaker and professional mourners, the boy\u2019s mother decided that the time had come for the family to move. So, they moved into town where the boy began to mimic the activities of the nearby merchants and imitate the sounds from the local slaughterhouse. This, too, she found unworthy of her son. So, they moved again to a small home near a school. Here, her son began to imitate the behavior, speech, and discipline of the teachers. Delighted by what she saw, she was convinced that she had finally found the right place for her boy to grow. And he did. He became a scholar that changed forever the philosophical and cultural landscape of China.[i]<\/a><\/p>

\u773e\u6240\u5468\u77e5\uff0c\u9019\u5c31\u662f\u300a\u5b5f\u6bcd\u4e09\u9077\u300b<\/strong>\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u3002\u9019\u500b\u6545\u4e8b\u5f9e\u5ee3\u7fa9\u4e0a\u8868\u660e\u4e86\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u6982\u5ff5\u3002\u5b83\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u77ad\u89e3\u5230\u4e00\u4f4d\u6bcd\u89aa\u7684\u667a\u6167\uff0c\u5979\u5728\u6559\u80b2\u5b50\u5973\u65b9\u9762\u6fc0\u52f5\u8457\u6210\u5343\u4e0a\u842c\u7684\u4eba\u3002\u5b83\u5e6b\u52a9\u6211\u5011\u4e86\u89e3\u6559\u80b2\u7684\u771f\u6b63\u8d77\u9ede\u3002<\/p>

This, as many of us will know, is the well-known story of Mencius’s Mother relocating her home three times to improve her son\u2019s education [\u5b5f\u6bcd\u4e09\u8fc1<\/strong> (M\u00e8ngm\u01d4 s\u0101n qi\u0101n)]. This story is indicative of the very conception of education in a broad way. It provides insights into the wisdom of a mother who inspired thousands like her in the education of their children. It helps us to understand where education really begins.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

That the family is the basic unit of civilization is a concept that is prevalent in many cultures. It is a place where the foundation of our world view and moral characters is built. Having chosen a home near a school, Mencius\u2019 Mother probably has understood well the dynamic relations between \u2018nature\u2019<\/em> and \u2018nurture\u2019<\/em>. Creating an environment in which children can flourish implies the collaborative and mutually supportive relationship between two kind of educators\u2014the teachers (formal) and the parents (informal) \u2014each exerting their own influences within their own sphere in educating the child. We hope you are in the mood for at least one more story, if you are not, please bear with us as the story of Mencius\u2019 childhood did not end there.<\/p>

\u9019\u500b\u6545\u4e8b\u5c31\u662f\u5b5f\u6bcd\u65b7\u6a5f\u6559\u5b50\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u3002\u5b5f\u5b50\u5c0f\u6642\u5019\u53ad\u5026\u5b78\u7fd2\u3002\u6709\u4e00\u6b21\u5979\u6bcd\u89aa\u767c\u73fe\u5b5f\u5b50\u5ffd\u8996\u4e86\u4ed6\u7684\u5b78\u696d\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u5979\u5c07\u4e00\u76f4\u5728\u7e54\u7684\u5e03\u88c1\u6389\u4e86\u4e00\u534a\u3002\u5b5f\u5b50\u5c0d\u9019\u7a2e\u884c\u70ba\u611f\u5230\u9707\u9a5a\uff0c\u4f46\u4ed6\u7684\u6bcd\u89aa\u544a\u8a34\u4ed6\uff0c\u9019\u4e0d\u904e\u662f\u548c\u4ed6\u5ffd\u8996\u5b78\u696d\u6240\u505a\u7684\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u6c92\u6709\u5b8c\u6210\u7684\u529f\u8ab2\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u6587\u4e0d\u503c\u7684\u3002\u5b5f\u5b50\u5438\u53d6\u4e86\u6559\u8a13\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u767c\u596e\u5716\u5f3a\u3002<\/p>

Another little anecdote further exemplifying his mother\u2019s virtues tells of a time when she found he was neglecting his studies and so cut in half the cloth she had been steadily weaving. Mencius was shocked at this behavior, but his mother told him it was no more than what he, himself, was doing by not finishing his schoolwork and so rendering it worthless. Mencius learned the lesson and returned to his studies.[ii]<\/a><\/p>

These stories of the critical role of Mencius\u2019 Mother in his education make us wonder where we got the idea of checking our children\u2019s homework from\u2026 We hope you see where we are going with this. The guidance and support a child receives from the family is a crucial piece of the educational puzzle. An educational institution such as a school contributes only a piece to the puzzle that is education. It cannot do it alone. The support a child receives from the family is essential; it is the first and the last crucial piece that begins and completes the puzzle. It is within the family that the foundation of our habits and characters is build. From there, the extended family and the community provide a rich habitat within which we grow. As we mature, we contribute back to the betterment of our community by walking a path of service. It is in this way that the circle of life finds completion.<\/p>

It is also a responsibility of the adults and community around them. There are three obvious entities that operate in any society \u2013 the individual, the community and the institutions. Each of these entities has an educational role to play. Unfortunately, in recent decades, the responsibility to educate has been placed almost solely on schools as \u201cparticular sorts of formal institutions.\u201d[iv]<\/a> This somewhat modern, specialized definition robs us of our rich heritage of collective learning and teaching as a human society. We need a new, broader way to look at education and how a school fits into this conception. The \u2018school\u2019 in our conception, besides being an institution, is by its very existence a \u201clearning community, whether for children or adults, public or private, compulsory or voluntary.\u201d[v]<\/a><\/p>

The concept of a learning community<\/em> serves as the context for our educational endeavors for community building. In its approach to education, the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community embraces all facets of education and this can be seen in at least two areas of community life. The School of the Nations serves one of these areas, functioning as an entity that seeks to foster the moral and intellectual development of children of all backgrounds in a sophisticated network that connects the local to the global, ranging from kindergarten, primary, secondary to the tertiary. In another area of community life, efforts are being made in a complex network of a different sort that distills global learning to address educational needs at the local level through courses and training that engage numerous individuals and groups in Macau to offer \u201cspiritual education starting from the age of five, upwards to the age of junior youth (ages 11 \u2013 14), and through into adulthood.\u201d \u201cThe contribution made by Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00eds is distinguished by its focus on building capacity for service; it is an approach founded on faith in the ability of a population to become the protagonists of their own development.\u201d Through the inspiration of the teachings of the Faith, participants help to improve the spiritual character and social conditions of the wider community to which they belong. The contribution of the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community is modest. We do not have all the answers to something so vast as education, but we have some ideas as to what we have learned and what we need to learn next.<\/p>

We hope it is clear, that education has a pivotal role to play in this process. But education cannot be viewed only as the responsibility of a few.\u00a0 Education has to deal with the expansion of knowledge, taking into account its generation, application and diffusion. In this context of a learning community<\/em>, in our approach, every one is a protagonist of their own education. Every human being is created noble and capable to educate and to be educated. Therefore, the educational approach we envision emphasizes a collaborative methodology of mutual support and the development of capacity of these protagonists is viewed in terms of \u201cwalking a path of service\u201d with a definite focus on the betterment of their community. On such a path, someone accompanies you as you learn to walk the path yourself. If you fall, there is somebody close by to give you a hand. Mistakes are accepted. Gradually, you gain the required confidence in acknowledging your weaknesses and in recognizing the strengths in others. You who were once being assisted are now assisting other to walk the path. This is the nature of capacity building in the context of a learning community where the one \u201cwho teaches\u201d and the one \u201cwho learns\u201d are both an integral part of the educational process that is participatory. That brings us to the question of the method of teaching-learning. One of the dimensions of our methodology is the raising of consciousness and the exercise of will. \"\"Teaching-learning is an active and conscious process. If we let go of the requirement that the student has to know that he or she is being educated, we lose the chance to create educational processes that lead to freedom; we sacrifice justice as a governing principle of education and open the door wide to manipulation. Admittedly, at an early age, the student will know little of the nature of the educational process, but systematically raising such an awareness is an essential task of one who is to be called a teacher.<\/p>

Since education is now highly formalized, it is understandable that some parents appear to think that the education of their children is the exclusive responsibility of institutions (like schools); others believe that in order to preserve the independence of children to investigate the world and make sense of it for themselves, any direct involvement of parents is a form of intrusion. Still others feel inadequate to take on such a task. None of this is correct. \u2018Abdu\u2019l-Bah\u00e1 has said that \u201cit is enjoined upon the father and mother, as a duty, to strive with all effort to train the daughter and the son.\u201d Independent of the level of their education, parents are in a critical position to shape the spiritual development of their children. They should not ever underestimate their capacity to mold their children\u2019s moral character.For they exercise indispensable influence through the home environment.[vii]<\/a>\u00a0 It is hard to argue that what Mencius\u2019 Mother did for his upbringing is not education. Any inadequacy she might have felt is compensated by her large degree of sacrifice and her unconditioned love. In view of his negligence in study, Mencius\u2019 Mother responded with the kind of love that demands discipline, the courage to accustom her child to hardship, and not to indulge his whims or leave him entirely to his own devices. These, we are sure, all parents can aspire to do.<\/p>

However, in order to educate their children to become, as young adults, autonomous individuals engaged in learning\u2014both personal and collective\u2014who in turn can contribute to the well being of others and society as a whole, parents need something more if they are to fulfil their ardent wish. There is an urgent need to reconceptualize education in such a way that the family is returned to its rightful place as an educational unit in which each member\u2019s consciousness is raised to a level befitting the coming of age of the human species. Engaging parents in the process of capacity building is not an area about which we can enter into satisfactory discussion at this point. This is clearly an area in which we still have much to learn. Fortunately, we think we have an idea where to begin.<\/p>

These include classes for the spiritual education of children in which they also develop a deep appreciation for the fundamental unity of the various human outlooks; groups that assist junior young to navigate a crucial stage of their lives and to withstand the corrosive forces that especially target them; and circles of study wherein youth and adult participants reflect on the spiritual nature of existence and build capacity for service to the community and society.[viii]<\/a> The doors to these learning spaces are wide open. Today, there are scores of people emerging in the Macau community\u2014mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, young and old\u2014serving as tutors, animators, or children\u2019s class teachers at various neighborhood and other community settings both formal and informal.<\/p>

Those serving as children\u2019s class teachers, especially parents, take a keen interest in the broad educational development of those they teach. The children\u2019s classes offered to the community is a six-year program with a focus on children ages 5 \u2013 11. At the moment, materials for study for the first 4 years are made available with an additional one gradually introduced at a later stage.In some localities, classes are also conducted for those younger than 5. The aim of Grade 1 of the children\u2019s classes is the development of spiritual qualities that contribute to the refinement of character while Grade 2 builds on these lessons by fostering the habits and pattern of conduct that give expression to these inner qualities explored in the previous year. The subsequent grades focus on the issues of knowledge and its implications for the refinement of character.<\/p>

A moral empowerment program is designed specifically for the young ones in the community known as junior youth, who fall between the ages of, say, 11 and 14. They represent a special group with special needs as they are somewhat in between childhood and youth when many changes are occurring within them. Creative attention must be devoted to involving them in programs of activity that will engage their interests, mold their capacities for teaching and service, and involve them in social interaction with older youth. The employment of the arts in various forms can be of great value in such activity. Thus, the program is carried out in the form of a youth group where these junior youth are supported by animators who are young people a few years their senior.<\/p>

It is within these circles of study that youth and adults participate in courses that help them reflect on the spiritual nature of existence and build capacity for service to the community and society. It is through this main sequence of courses that children\u2019s class teachers, animators of junior youth groups and tutors of study circles are trained. With this, some of you in the audience have direct and personal experiences. We hope more will join us in this endeavor.<\/p>

These conversations explore questions and themes such as parenting, early childhood education, the intellectual and character development of youth, lifelong learning, material and spiritual aspects of development, the importance service to humanity, to name just a few.\u00a0 Regardless of its form, the conversations we are bringing to your consideration are not solely an intellectual exercise. Ideas find concrete expression in service to humanity. Such conversations welcome the participation of people coming from totally different backgrounds ensuring universal participation. Although still in its initial stages, the educational process promoted by the Bah\u00e1\u2019\u00ed community in Macau is clearly making some contributions to the establishment of such a conversation.<\/p>
